Behind the Chair Stories: Why Dandruff Keeps Coming Back

Welcome to Behind the Chair Stories, a series where I share real experiences from my work as an independent hairstylist based at Your Hair Studio, Gosport. Every story is inspired by real client conversations (with identities always kept private) and is designed to help you better understand your hair, your scalp and everyday haircare.

“This shampoo helps my dandruff” — my client told me. But I asked her a different question…

Today I had a client who came to me with a very common problem — dandruff.

She said:

— I have been using an anti-dandruff shampoo from the shop for a long time. It helps me.

And you know what? I believe her.

Because it is true: many anti-dandruff shampoos can give a quick improvement. After washing, there are fewer visible flakes, the scalp feels cleaner and there is a fresh, comfortable feeling.

But I asked her another question:

— What happens when you stop using it?

Her answer was something I hear quite often:

— After a few days, it comes back.

Understanding the Cause of Dandruff

And this is where the interesting part begins.

Dandruff is not simply “dirt” on your scalp that needs to be washed away. It is a signal from your scalp that something has changed and needs attention.

Sometimes the reason can be simple: the wrong haircare routine, cleansing that is too harsh, a dry scalp, or a product that simply does not suit you.

But sometimes the reason can be deeper.

Our skin is the largest organ of our body. It is connected with what is happening inside us. Stress, diet, sleep quality, hormonal changes and our general health can all influence the condition of our skin and hair.

This is why our hair and scalp should not be seen as something separate from our body.

Healthy Hair Starts with a Healthy Scalp

We often spend a lot of time looking after the lengths of our hair: buying masks, oils, serums, shine treatments and repair products.

But we forget the most important part — hair grows from the scalp.

If your scalp feels uncomfortable, itchy, flaky, sensitive or becomes oily very quickly, it is important not just to change one shampoo after another, but first to understand the reason.

I always say to my clients:

Good haircare does not start with beautiful packaging or loud advertising. It starts with understanding what your scalp actually needs.

The same product can work perfectly for one person and not work at all for another.

So before buying another “anti-dandruff” product, ask yourself:

Am I really solving the problem, or am I only hiding the symptoms for a short time?

Sometimes the right haircare routine is enough. Sometimes it is better to speak to a specialist and understand why your scalp is reacting this way.

Healthy hair does not start at the ends.
It starts with a healthy scalp.

Behind the Chair Stories

In my work, I see many different situations every day: people who have struggled with oily hair for years, people trying to manage dryness and flaking, and people who have bought many different products but the problem keeps coming back.

That is why I have decided to create a new series called Behind the Chair Stories.

Here I will share real situations from my work (without sharing any personal client information), explain in simple words what can happen with our hair and scalp, and talk about what is truly worth paying attention to.

Coming Up in Future Stories

In the next stories, we will talk about:

  • Why your hair can become oily quickly, even when you wash it every day.
  • Why expensive haircare does not always give results.
  • Which everyday haircare mistakes can affect the health of your hair.
  • Why the condition of your hair depends not only on what we put on it from the outside, but also on what is happening inside our body.

Looking After Your Hair and Scalp

Because beautiful hair is not only about choosing the right shampoo.

It is about understanding your body, your scalp and choosing care that is right for you.

With love for your hair and respect for the way our body works.
